Join Katy Tessman for a book signing at Wildflower Bookshop
and a concert at Rapids Brewing Company during
Grand Rapids’ First Friday Art Walk on Friday, April 7.
On Friday, April 7, author and singer-songwriter Katy Tessman will be visiting Grand Rapids for First Friday Art Walk, a community event celebrating art and creativity. She will be sharing her new new song and accompanying lyric picture book Hero Now Crowned - a tribute to everyone who has overcome hardships - whether it be a health crisis, a battle with addiction, or coping with anxiety, depression, or grief.
First, Wildflower Bookshop (2 3rd St NE Suite 40) will host Tessman for a book signing at 4:30 p.m. Then, Tessman will head over to Rapids Brewing Company (214 N Pokegama Ave) for a concert at 6:30 p.m. with her 20-year-old son Louis Tessman Stanoch on electric guitar. |
The hero’s journey is personal for Tessman. In October 2009, after her first mammogram, she was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 39 (Her sons were just 3 and 6 years old). Using the wisdom she’s gained through her cancer journey, Tessman is an optimistic writer who aims to spread hope and joy. She authored the award-winning children’s book about breast cancer, Our Mama is a Beautiful Garden, and was named CHANGEMAKER by the Minnesota Women’s Press.
“By sharing my story, I hope to remind people of all ages that simply fighting, surviving, and continuing the battle certifies them as a hero,” says Tessman.
Tune in to KAXE/KBXE Radio's Centerstage MN on Friday at 2pm to listen to an interview with Tessman about her new song and book.
Tessman has personal ties to Grand Rapids; her parents are (now retired) educators and so summers growing up were spent with family 23 miles north of town on Caribou Lake. As an adult, she continues to visit their family lake home year round.
“I have great respect for the arts community in the Rapids area,” says Tessman. “I’m excited to perform with my son on a spring evening in one of my favorite towns in Minnesota.”

About the BookTessman teamed with St. Paul-based artist Bebe Keith on the lyric picture book.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed collaborating with illustrator Bebe Keith on the lyric picture book for Hero Now Crowned. Just as I collaborate with musicians on my songs in the recording studio and on stage, Bebe’s enchanting watercolors have given my lyrics a new voice. I am so grateful to have her as a member of my ‘band,’” says Tessman. |
About the SongIn addition to Tessman’s powerful and passionate lead vocals, her new single Hero Now Crowned features Nikki Lemier on harp and backing vocals.
“I am very pleased with the creative contributions Nikki gave to my song,” says Tessman. “With flavors of Fleetwood Mac, Florence and the Machine, and The Cranberries, Hero Now Crowned is an uplifting pop-rock single I hope people will dance to while they celebrate their personal stumbles and summits.” |
